Todays Old Style Irish Song Podcast Notes:
Season 3,#3.  Sean Nós, at the Irish Roots Cafe

Todays Song:  The Leaving of Limerick
Song Artist:    Peneleapaí
Recorded in:   County Clare, Ireland (and Kansas City, MO)

Notes on todays Chat and Sing:
Anyone thinking of taking up Sean Nós would do
well to listen to todays broadcast, both for the song,
and for the comments by the singer, Peneleapaí.

Many have commented on the similarity between
the song ‘Leaving of Limerick’ and the song ‘Leaving
of Liverpool’.  Some debate which came first, and
many agree one gave birth to the other.  Of course,
Limerick is in Ireland, and Liverpool is the port
from which so many Irish left for the Americas.

I have not researched the topic in depth yet, but
immediately recognize the beauty in this song, and
I agree with Peneleapaí that it feels like an ‘old style’
song.  Slow and soulful, we are lucky to have
recorded this live performance.

If I remember correctly, our singer credits
Deirdre Scanlan  (of Nenagh AND Limerick)
for her original source of the song, as do
most sources I have seen on the internet.
Deirdre credits the song to Nora Butler from
Nenagh.
I have also seen notes on a song titled,
‘The Leaving of Ireland’, which may or may
not have been used for this tune at times.

Todays singer, has agreed to return for another
tune, and we will continue her interview (chat),
later in this series. I would be sure to return for that !

Here is one set of lyrics to this song
The Leaving of Limerick

As I roved out one evening down by the Assembly Mall
I heard two lovers talking as me and my love passed on;
The words that passed between them they were but very few:
“It isn’t the leaving of Limerick that grieves me,
But my darling when I think of you!”

“In the morning when I’m going I’ll wave my lily-white hand,
I’ll wave it all over my shoulder, and adieu to Limerick Strand;
And farewell to the girls of Thomond Gate, ’tis to them I bed adieu;
It isn’t the leaving of Limerick that grieves me,
But my darling when I think of you!”

“when I think of the pleasant days we spent in search of treasure trove
And the hours we spent in courting away in Gabbet’s Grove;
I did not then deceive you when I vowed I would be true;
It isn’t the leaving of Limerick that grieves me,
But my darling when I think of you!”

“And now that we must be parted ’tis hard to understand
Why I must go broken hearted away from Limerick strand;
Though, My fond love, I must leave , you know my heart it is true;
It isn’t the leaving of Limerick that grieves me,
But my darling when I think of you!”

Here is another version:

Leaving of Limerick
As I roved out one evening, down by the Assembly Mall
I heard two lovers speaking as me and my love passed on
And the words that passed between them, they were but very few.
Its not the leaving of Limerick that grieves me, but my darling, leaving you

In the morning when I am going, I will take you by the lily white hand
And I’ll wave it oer my shoulder saying adieu to the Limerick strand
So farewell to the boys of Thomond Gate, It’s to them I’ll bid Adieu.
Its not the leaving of Limerick that grieves me, but my darling, leaving you

And now that we must be parted, I know you will understand
Why I must go broken hearted, far away from my native land
Though my fond love I must leave you, you know my heart is true.
Its not the leaving of Limerick that grieves me, but my darling, leaving you
