We interview Maria today, and ask her how
she became acquainted with Irish music and
the history of her family regarding the same.
It is interesting to remember that Elvis and
contemporary music was the favorite for most
of us back in the 50’s and 60’s, and Irish language
songs were all but forgotten…
History of the Song
Pádraig Pearse, authored a set of lyrics for this
tune known today as ‘Oro, Se do Bheatha a Bhaile’.
It is a patriotic call for the Irish to return home
and free Ireland. Pearse is a well known leader of
the 1916 ‘rebellion’.
The original tune is said to come from an 18th
century Jacobite song. The lyrics were of course
different from what we have here today.
The well noted P. W. Joyce notes this tune as
‘A Hauling-Home Song’. This would be used when
a bride made the move from her old home to her

Lyrics (one of several variations):
Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile!
Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile!
Oro, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile!
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh.
Sé do bheatha a bhean ba léanmhar
B’é ár gcreach tú bheith i ngéibhinn
Do dhúiche bhreá i seilbh méirleach
Is tú díolta leis na Gallaibh.
A bhuí le Rí na bhfeart go bhfeiceam
Muna mbean beo ‘na dhiaidh ach seachtain
Gráinne Mhaol agus míle gaiscíoch.
Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh
Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag teacht thar sáile
Oglaigh armtha léi mar gharda
Gaeil iad féin ‘s ní Gaill ná Spáinnigh;
‘S cuirfid siad ruaig ar Ghallaibh.
