Irish Family Origins, part one www.Irishroots.com
From “The Families of County Cork, Ireland”
including leading families of Munster. part 1.
More information found here:
“The families of Cork have had a tremendous
effect on the whole of the province of Munster.
Ancient Munster was comprised of North
Munster presently called Thomand (see
Families of Co. Clare); South Munster today
recognized as Desmond (Cork); East Munster
(Ormond); and West Munster.
O’Brien and MacCarthy Rise
In The Families of Co. Clare we saw the
rise of the Dalcassions in Clare under Brian
Boru. The O’Briens of Clare, (North Munster),
would break from the control of The MacCarthy
and the Eugenian families of south Munster.
In the 12th century MacCarthy no longer held
sway in the north of Munster.
Families of Co. Kerry
At about the same time, in The Families of
Co. Kerry, we saw the family of O’Donoghue
move into Kerry from Co. Cork and establish
itself as pre-eminent in the beautiful area
around Killarney. The O’Donoghues were
another Eugenian family of Munster, who
replaced the existing ‘Eoganacht Loch Lein’
in Kerry, which included Moriarty, Cahill,
Flynn and O’Carroll. Some even theorize the
Eugenians as originating in that part of Kerry.
Mahoney, Kirby, Sullivan, O’Keefe, Callaghan….
There are many branches of the Eoganacht
families found in this book. Eoganacht
Raithlind anciently held south Cork, represented
by O’Donoghue and O’Mahoney. Eoganacht
Glendamnach ruled over Fermoy under O’Keefe.
Eoganacht Aine is found under O’Kirby.
Eoganacht Caisil (Cashel) claimed supremacy
over all most anciently, and of this line are
most often given Sullivan, MacCarthy and
