What is The Book of Irish Families, great and small ?

The author and editor to this work explains the 3 different
sections to this book, and why it was compiled:

1. The Family History Section
2. The family location index ( particularly for rare names)
3. The Master Index to the Irish Families Project.

This book contains information on specific families from
every county in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Most of the info
in this volume is not found in the later volumes to the series.
Hence, it is made to work with the individual county volumes
to the series

What does it contain ?
This is the first volume of the Irish Families Project.
(see also video on the complete 34 book set).
Here are more details on the 3 sections to this book:

Section One of the Book of Irish Families
The first section contains family history from every county in
Ireland and Northern Ireland. This includes locations, coats of
arms, spellings of the name, and family history.  This material
in this book starts the family history collection in each county.
Several thousand families are found in this first section.
Later volumes continue the story on a county by county basis.

Section Two of the Book of Irish Families
The second section is the master location index.  It is included
to help research rare family names, variant spellings and locations.
Included are all the names from the 1659 census, the Birth Index,
and from special reports in our files. Many names are tied to a
specific Poor Law Union in Ireland. Most are tied simply to a county.
Section one contained family history, this section is strictly for locating
a county or Poor Law Union in Ireland connected to the name, and
possible variant spellings of the name.
There are some 18,000 families in this section, section two.

Section Three of the Book of Irish Families

This contains the Master Index to the entire Irish Families Project.
It will tell you if your surname, perhaps under several spellings, appears
in the other county books in the set. The volume number is given to
tell you which county book it is in.  There are over 45,000 family names
in this section, each tied to a specific county book. This book, which
includes all three sections is titled:
“The Book of Irish Families, great and small” by O’Laughlin,

The Worlds First Irish Families History and Genealogy Podcast
Run Time: 2:48

The Irish Families broadcast began in 2006, and was the very first
such weekly podcast ever produced.  Since then we have added
4 more broadcasts, including those enhanced with photos,
live web links, and video.

The First Shows

I began with 6 workshop sessions from 1984 that I recorded
around the time of St. Patricks Day celebrations.  The recordings
had been sitting for several decades, and little did I know they
would be of use in launching the Irish Families show.  These
six shows covered genealogical research at that time.  The explosion
of research on the web today has made things much easier.
The basics of Irish research remain the same however.

Guests, Interviews, Topics

We have since included interviews with DNA experts, Irish from
around the globe, authors, dancers and friends.  It’s all to help
us connect with our Ancestors and our heritage.  We cover coat of
arms, tartans, books, the family name of the week, curious news
and notes, and the website of the month, along with family history
notes throughout.

From All Nations

Our fans come from all over the world, including the U.S.A., Canada,
Australia, Ireland and England. I also get notes from South Africa,
Singapore, the Middle East, and Russia now and then!

Today
On Sept. 1, 2008 we added an enhanced version of this broadcast.
Enhanced means we add photographs and live links to the web
that you can see and use while listening to the show.  To use that
version of our Irish Families podcast, you must have Quicktime
installed on your computer (or similar).  Not to worry, the original
broadcast is still here too !
