Brians Tribe, The Dal Cais (Dalcassions or Dal gCas)
First Took the lands of Eastern County Clare in 934, first mention in Annals.
Two Branches of the Family at work. Clare was in the Province of Munster.
Lorcon or Larkin was Brian Borus grandfather
Kennedy was Brians Father ( Kennedy Mac Lorcon)
Birth of Brian
Brian Boru Born, per the Annals of Ulster (Four Masters not correct date).
Cellachan, King of Munster, released by Ui Neill defeating Dalcassions at
Mag Duine, Killing two of Kennedys sons. (who were Brians brothers)
Battle for the Kingship of Tara. Norse fought on both sides.
Kennedy Mac Lorcain holds Dalcassion kingship. The Ui Neill , Kings now
of Tara defeats them, Killing two more of Brian Borus brothers. but tribes to
the south were fragmented and warring…
Kennedy, Brians Father, dies when Brian is only 10. succeeded by son Lachtna.
who was killed in 953 by rival Dalcassions. His brother Mahon now leads.
The Northern Ui Neill made havoc for Southern Ui Neill, with the consent
of the Norse of Dublin, formerly Southern Ui Neill Ally.
The Southern Ui Neill defeats the Norse of Dublin and northern Ui Neill, but
the formers King (Callahan) was slain. Kingship then in conflict for Province
About now the Dalcassions were slowly controlling the Shannon river to the
North coming into conflict with the King of the Province of Connaught.
This also leaves them in battle for Kingship of Province of Munster.
Brians Brother Mahan now in charge of Dalcassions and he battles the
Mael Muad for kingship of Munster.
Cashel Falls to Brians brother
Mahon, Brians brother takes the stronghold of Cashel in Munster, and then
sacks the Viking stronghold of Limerick in 967, expelling Ivar, the Viking King.
969. Mahon also allies himself with the Vikings of Waterford in this era.
No High King
Kingship of Ireland still in strife. Northern and Southern Ui Neill still battling.
Norse of Limerick Rebel against Mahon. 976 killed him by treachery being
captured by Donovan, when meeting under a truce at Bruree.
Brian Boru son of Kennedy, son of Larkin, becomes king of Munster.
Attacks his brothers killers, slays them. (slays the King of Munster Mael Muad)
Last Ui Neill King of Tara in the old style. As they continued to fight northern
and southern Ui Neill. Brians tribe become more powerful, eventually to
overthrow the last of the Ui Neill ard-ri (High Kings).
All of this was leading to the Battle of Clontarf with Brian leading his forces
against Irish Leinster and the VIkings.
Brian knew when to retreat as well as attack.
Constant revolts against his power were put down.
The North of Ireland had removed the Vikings but lost towns and trade
as a result. The Dalcassions ruled the church at Killaloe and Emly. Brian
recognizes Armagh as the apostolic city of Ireland with tributes.
Was he the reformer and builder of schools that some have said ?

About Your Session Leaders
Both Michael and Peter are graduates of Rockhurst University,
and have given lectures, exhibits, tours, and educational
seminars relating to Ireland since 1984.
Peter Reilly Adams
Hedge School Instructor
Peter traces his roots to the County Fermanagh and County
Cavan. Growing up in the City of New York and influenced by
the Irish neighborhoods, he was educated in Catholic Schools
all his life and was a member of the Augustinian Recollect
Order. Now in Kansas City, Kansas, he has a Bacholar
Degree in Philosophy, Theology and History and Masters
in Liberal Arts and Public Administration
He has taught at every level of education over the past 40
years and served as Assistant to the Mayor in Kansas City.
He was the host of the Irish Radio show, Celtic Crossings
and has led tours to Ireland for 23 years. He is a noted
musician and a talented vocalist.
Michael C. O’Laughlin
Mike O’Laughlin is the founder of the hedge school,
and is the leading author and publisher of Irish Works
in the field of Irish Families, Genealogy and History.
