Notes This Week:
What’s happening today at the Irish Roots Cafe

1)  Well, we have released the first two episodes of ‘Hello Fada,
accent on the Irish Language’, and it is being received very well,
due in no small part to the Hedge instructor Renata.  We all
appreciate her help here by the hedge rows.  Be sure to take
a listen yourself.  You do not have to have any knowledge of
the language to start enjoying this show today !

2)  We have three shows currently in season, the Language; the
of Ireland History; and Irish Family History. The one you are
listening to is the Irish family history show.  I may alternate this
podcast with the others for a bit - just to make room. So….
be sure to subscribe to them so you stay in contact when we
alternate weeks…. no point in going without your favorite podcast
now is there ?

3)  If you know someone who might like to sponsor the Hedge
School, the podcasts and the web pages, please do pass it on !
Keep the hedge growing… We get millions of hits !

Book of the Month:

1)  A Special census of Ireland, Pynnars Survey
This Book Includes Rare Land Owner Records and Historical
Notations Including Counties Armagh, Tyrone, Donegal, Cavan,
and Fermanagh, with notes on Londonderry (Derry).

What it is
It was originally compiled as a result of the 17th century plantation
of Ireland (1609+). A landholders census record, it set about to give
us the results of the ‘planting’ of families from outside Ireland onto
Irish lands. Here, Pynnar gives us the name and condition of
Undertakers, servitors, and principal natives on these Ulster lands.
The footnotes by Hill are of particular note, at times bringing updates
into the 19th century.

Some of the Families
This volume is very useful, to historians and family researchers today.
There are too many families and specific plots of land to mention,
but here are a few of the families with multiple listings in this work:
Acheson; Alexander; Bingley; Beresford; ODonnelly; O’Boyle; Browne;
Chichester; McCaffery; Butler; McBryan; Cole; Dillon; Hamilton  (30 listings); Moore; Maguire; Oneale; OReilly; Stewart; Richardson; Wilson; Wray
and hundreds more…..

Todays extract on Strafford:
“An order to restore the estate was issued by the Earl of Strafford, when
Lord Lieutenant of Ireland…. This order formed the 6th article of
impeachment against Strafford on his trial in 1642.’’  This was noted in a
land case involving Richard Roulstone and the Plantation of Settlers in
Ulster in the 17th century.  Also mentioned are Moore and Tatton and
Boucher, and Wigson, and O’Quinn, and Swinfin, etc…
Note the date of  the trial given above, which is near the onset of the civil
war in Ireland, which saw many Irish leaving Ireland in exile by the end
of that century.
