Notes This Week:
1) We’ve been finalizing next years Hedge School History classes.
We’ve come up with several combining song and history of Ireland,
and even a few in the Irish Language, for those who don’t know
the Irish language.
2) The first four episodes of our Irish Places and Travel Broadcast
have been completed, we have Cork, Kerry, Clare and Limerick now !
3) The Republic of Ireland has many folks going on strike, as of
Tuesday the 24th of November. They are protesting cuts in
salaries by the government… so you might want to call ahead
before visiting certain museums or heritage sites.

One Minute Podcast
Each week we take a listen to another podcast, usually one
of the 8 series we have in the works covering Song; Recitation;
Travel & Places; Irish Hedgerow History; Irish in America; and
an Irish Word.
Todays Podcast extract: From Irish Hedgerow History lessons.
The topic is the Viking incursions into Ireland, and here we
start a discussion on who the Vikings were, as they prepared
to attack Ireland and Europe….
And as I remember it, the Vikings had to have boats that would
do well in shallow waters at times to…. and they did come
waaaay up the Shannon, and into Russia !

Book of the Month:
1) ‘Names in the Land Grants of Ireland’ (book)
http://www.irishroots.com/id4446.htm
This is a hardbound book, part of the ‘Conquest of Ireland’
series I published several years back, focusing on families
and names in the North of Ireland.
Where we find J. Sheale on page 321, and there we read of
“38. Grant to James Sheale, gent., Tullygarrin and Corhill,”
with some acreage noted and the rent.
We are given then, two specific locations that Mr. Sheale is
connected with, and that can help in researching the family.
Itemized land grants to English, Scots, and Irish. Identity of the
specific persons, location of lands, with historical commentary.
(107 pages) 0-940134-44-6 Footnoted. The Land Grants in this work are
taken from the Patent Rolls of the reign of James I and from the printed
Ulster Inquisitions. The book is most importantly arranged with the
following sections:
Land Grants for the English (Undertakers), complete with names.
Land Grants for the Scottish (Undertakers), complete with names
Land Grants for the Servitors, complete with names
Land Grants to the Native Irish, complete with names
Important Notations
We are not left with only the dry ‘census’ type
information here. Take the example of Sir Richard Waldron, who is given
with lands in the Precinct of Loughtee, in County Cavan. Below the
listings of his lands we find footnotes telling us that Richard was the son
of John Waldron, that he became a knight, that there is record of a
petition from him in 1610, and that his son, Thomas Waldron came to
live on the land there as well. This type of commentary is often given
on families found in the records. (see index at end of listing)
Name Changes
We also find many notations on family names and the
spelling of the same. Take the name Smelhome on the land record,
which this book also tells us is found as Smailholme in Scotland, and
as Smethorne in an inquisition in 1629. Take the name of ‘Cooke’,
which was an alias of ‘Gray’ for one settler; and the name Calefield
which was also spelled as Caulfield. Very helpful information if you
are trying to trace someone in the family

Irish Family Name of the Day:
O’Sheal
Todays family history in honor of member:
Connie C. Stringer
Related Spellings of the Name
O’Shiel, Shields, Sheil, Shiell, Sheales
Varient Spelling Groups: 1874; 3107;
(Taken from the Master Guide to the Various Spellings
of Irish Family Names) http://www.irishroots.com/id4918.htm
History of the Name
The O’Shiel or O’Sheil family of Ireland is most often found in Dublin, Donegal and Londonderry in the 1890 birth index of Ireland. It is found, as it almost always is, without the “O” prefix before the name there. The family is also noted in Down and Antrim. It is obviously a name of Ulster based on a search of existing records……..
Barry Fitzgerald, the American actor, was actually William Shiels at birth. More anciently Murtagh O’Shiel served as hereditary physician to Mac Coughlan, who died in 1548. Connach O’Shiel became bishop of Elphin in 1545.

Curious News and Notes
1) Irelands Tallest Christmas Tree, 100 ft. high, made from steel,
slipped from its moorings as it was tugged to the midst of the
Shannon River. The tree was then swept down and crashed into
the Shannon Bridge, which was closed…… perhaps there is a message
here about using metal for Christmas Tree ? hmmm
http://www.independent.ie/national-news/chaos-as-shannon-uproots-giant-christmas-tree-1950188.html
2) County Clare bicycle route named one of the top 10 in the world.
From Miltown Malbay and Doolin in West Clare.
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2009/1118/1224259043069.html
3) Worst rains in 30 years brought floods to Cork, Galway and the
Lovely River Lee over ran its banks and more… and I also saw a
photo of a man in a canoe of some sort in County Fermanagh…
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1120/breaking3.htm
4) In midst of recession a record 75,000 births recorded last year in
Ireland and Jack and Ava were the most popular names. And it seems
more boys have been born than girls for 8 years running.
http://www.herald.ie/national-news/recession-delivers-a-record-new-baby-boom-1949354.html
5) As opposed to the recent cheap shot book about De Valera:
Eamon de Valera 1882 - 1975
“De Valera Dominated Irish Life as a Fighter,
Hero, Leader, Statesman”
Headline on New York Times Obituary, August 30, 1975
http://www.apostles.com/devalera.html
6) In a twist of fate, the Irish now wish to have fewer non-Irish
immigrating to Ireland, as a result of the economic downturn in
jobs, etc…. and some 13% plan to immigrate to another country
within the next 5 years !
