www.Irishroots.com The Irish Roots Cafe

The Book of Irish Families, great & small

Final Edition
When I first put this book together waay back in the 90′s there was no thought of a 4th edition in 2013 ! But here we are, and I imagine this will be the final printing, as time is escaping me.. This final edition has 400 large format pages (8 1/2 x 11), Family Histories, Coats of Arms, and new items like the complete 34 book index to the Irish Family Projects, and family locations from the map of the Four Masters.)

Family Histories
So, we have the 7th printing of The Book of Irish Families, with around 2000 family histories – some running a full column, and some just noted for future reference. (With my library of 3,000 Irish books and the internet to draw from, this book could expand forever.) So within limits of money and time, we also include 700 coats of arms, as we found them, some tattered and torn and several centuries old.

New Master Index added
All 34 books in The Irish Family Project are tied together with this book. The other books in the series are smaller, with more genealogical information, and a few family histories, on a county by county basis. (All 32 Counties in Ireland have their own book in this series!). So then, this book has over 50,000 surnames in the index – for all 34 books in the Irish Families Project and then some. (Just knowing that your name appears in a specific county book, can help narrow a search.)

Location Index
One complete section of the book is the Location Index, most helpful for rarer names and spellings. Here we put our database of Irish names to good use. If you find a name here, it will likely come with the name of a county following it on our list. That county is where we found the name. We included the basic resources like the ’1659 Irish Census’ and the ‘Birth Index of Ireland’ for this part of the book. We also included the variant spelling index, and some older 19th century works. We have many names keyed to a specific Poor Law Union in Ireland, which can also be helpful. A simple asterisk and number follows these names. (Take that number and go to the Poor Law Union index at the end of the section for the district the name is given in.)

Four Masters show locations
We have added another family location aid in this new edition of Irish Families, great & small. We include every family name from the ‘Map of the Four Masters’ as found in our edition of the ‘Annals of Ireland by the Four Masters’. Each name is followed by the county it was shown in on the map found in volume 2 of that work (our Connellan translation, IGF edition).

Free Disc included (free)
I am also including a disc in this edition for the first time. This computer disc has information from one or more of our projects, and is meant to be a helpful introduction some of what we have put together these last 30 years. It is among the first that I have produced, so I do hope you will enjoy it as a free bonus ! (I am putting the CD or DVD disc in the books at random, so each book may have a different bonus with it!).

Launch is June 10, 2013
The book will be on my web site soon (www.Irishroots.com), and I’ll carry a few to the Irish fests in Dublin, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky this year. I’ll also list it on Amazon with my other titles as soon as time permits! Here is the link to my sold out 3rd edition of the book, but I will ship this new 4th edition if you order from this page, at the old price!
http://www.irishroots.com/id4098.htm

Irish House Band Update
Our newly formed Irish House band launched
successfully this year, and it is the first
band to perform all Irish language shows
in the midwest, as a matter of fact, I’ve
never heard of it done before in the U.S.
at all! (but I am sure someone has done it?)
The old style Irish songs date back as far as
the 16th century according to some accounts

Sean Nós and Traditional
We perform all Irish language shows, as well
as shows of traditional Irish songs in English.
Of course, we can mix the two as needed for
the occasion! Our current permanent house
members, all of whom do vocals, include:
Mike O’Laughlin also on percussion; Megan
Illidge on Mandolin; and Stevie Davis on
fiddle.

March Launch, Seachtaine na Gaeilge
Below are the first performances we made
in March, all of which were well received in
both Irish and English language formats!
We also played our part in ‘Irish Language Week’
(more like Irish Language month!), and offered to
teach the audience an Irish song or two…
best we could….:

Our Irish Gigs for March 2013

Irish Roots Cafe March 2013 Schedule
March 1 -Crossroads Coffeehouse KCMO
March 2 – St. Andrews church (Gladstone)
March 9 – Browne’s Marketplace KCMO
March 10 – Immaculate Conception/Louisburg, KS
March 16 – Celtic Ranch, Weston, MO
Recording Session Tomorrow
After that opening month, we decided to take
a 30 day break, and are now recording an album
that’s been in the works awhile. (We will of
course, break from recording sessions to
play for you if you’d like!)

Genealogy too!
I made Irish genealogy resources available at
several of our performances – including books
and maps – It’s a habit I can’t seem to break,
and all part of the historical context of what
we do. Speaking of genealogy, that is how I
was introduced to old style Irish song, and
my first reason for appearing at Irish events
around the country.

Irish Festival Season
With the Irish Fests coming up shortly, I should note
that I have sung Sean Nós style songs at the
Dublin Irish Festival tent for Sean Nós; and at the
ceili for the Louisville, KY. Irish Fest.
Hope to return this year, and get the whole group
to perform there too – soon! Two great events to be sure…

March 10, 2013 - Browne’s Irish Market, 7:20 am
For those who have not heard, the oldest Irish business
in North America is located at Browne’s in Kansas City, Missouri.
(see detailed links below for podcasts and details on Browne’s).
Browne’s remains at the heart of the Irish community today
in Kansas City, with a deli; gift shop; and annual Irish Street fair !

(see video above) This morning Browne’s patrons gathered for
traditional Irish Breakfast along with Irish dance and song.
Entertainment included the Irish Roots Cafe house band, a
group with a focus on the oldest of Irish songs, in the
Sean Nós tradition (old style). This style of song is most often
sung solo, with distinctive ornamentation.
Their songs, in the Irish language, date back several centuries,
and are rarely heard. The group alos includes fiddle, mandolin,
and bodhran for other traditional tunes and songs.

Rare Irish Language band launch !
Things have been way busy here lately, as we
prepared our Irish Language band for launch.
March is the official launch in the Midwest,
performing in Missouri at Kansas City, Gladstone,
and Weston. And in Kansas at Lawrence, and
Louisburg. Our Irish Roots Cafe house band
is off to a great start. We are unique not
only in having all Irish language performances,
but for including our Irish genealogy reference
and book display at many events.

About the Band
The Irish Roots Cafe House Band performs old style
Sean Nós, all Irish Language sets. We also play
English language traditional Irish tunes. You’ll
hear the Irish Bodhran; Fiddle; and Guitar along
with 3 vocalists in our main group. (I’d like to
see some Irish pipes as well! )

Sean Nós song style
Sean Nós means ‘old style’ in the Irish language.
I have many songs that I perform in this style,
solo, in the Irish language, along with a bit
of history to go with the song. The band has
taken many of the old songs and updated them
with some modern styling (‘Sean Nós Nua’).

Traditional Selections in English
We have several sets of Irish music in
in the standard English too! It’s grand
to combine the two – as it’s never quite
been done on this scale in the midwest before.

Band Available
Our performing house band includes Mike O’Laughlin,
Stevie Wilson Davis, and Megan Illidge. You’ll
also often see ‘Laura’, one of our favorite Irish
dancers on hand. Peter Reilly Adams and
Maria Morton are also available for special
performances.
Most of our dates in March have filled up, but
we still have a few days available, including
St. Patricks Day (now St. Patricks day would
be really special with some Irish language
songs – wouldn’t it ?)
A listing of our current appearances is below:

My Review of:
The History of the Families of The Clanna Rory
or Rudricians. Descendants of Roderick the Great,
Monarch of Ireland.

From Ancient Records
in the Libraries of Trinity College and the Royal Irish Acadamy
From Our Native Annals, The publications of Several Learned Societies
and other reliable sources by R. R. Cronnelly

An Early Work on Irish Families
This book includes an introduction with the ancient genealogy of the clan or family and its various branches. Then, each family is documented with history and stories as available. Some families, like Farrell, O’More or Moore and Reynolds, are given many pages of information. Most families get a full page of coverage. A few families, notably O’Mulvey; Neville; O’Connery; Melody; Keogh, and MacRory or Rodgers are given mention, just giving family lands.

This early work on families in Ireland was a groundbreaking publication in Irish genealogy for these families. The complete index to this work is online at IGF Name Index

Introduction to this edition
This work is of interest to family researchers and historians. It is unique in its era, with the early date of its appearance (1864), and in its subject matter of the Clanna Rory. It came into print before the noted 19th century work ‘The Genealogical History of the Milesian Families of Ireland‘. While the current volume by Cronnelly does not have as many names or charts as found in Milesians, it goes more into much more depth for the families of the Clanna Rory. In this, the researcher will find more hope in uncovering his family history. Historians will also find more material to prove or disprove, as the case may be. Our thanks goes out to members of the Irish Genealogical Foundation who have made the reprinting of these two historical works possible. Those involved with the study of Irish books and family research will appreciate the rare nature of this work published in 19th century Ireland. The reader will note the imperfections on these pages, which appear exactly as in the original in our possession. Surviving from the 19th to the 21st century, we hope you will allow for the ravages of time. (copyright IGF 2002. Introduction by Michael C. O’Laughlin) Some of the actual families that are a part of this Irish sept or clan are listed in the table of contents below, along with a few variant spellings:

Detailed Accounts of Legend or Fact?
This work begins with the existing legends of the earliest times on earth down to the reign of ‘Roderick the Great’ or ‘Rory the Great’, who was a red headed king of Ireland, and them moves into documented historical accounts of each family in Ireland. The Magennises (Guinness etc..) were the senior family of the Irian or Rudrician race – centered in County Down. Families of the Clan Cionga The O’Mores or Moores are given as descended from the Clan Cionga dating back to 1016; the O’Cronnellys of the same Clan came from Louth; The O’Dugans of the Hy Many or Ui Maine, are traced back to Galway and the Sodan; McGowan or Smith are given springing from the Dalariada; The McWards are given as hereditary chiefs to the O’Donnells; Scanlan; Kenny of Meath; Lawlor; Lynch; Maginn; McCartan; O’Carelon and Gray are all given with details and all are of the Clan Cionga.

Families of the Clan Fergus The book then moves on with details of the Clan Fergus down to the 17th century, complete with written description of arms. The Clan Corc comes next, including O’Connor Cork who early had settled in County Clare; also of this clan are given the O’Loughlen Burren with pedigree down to 1600.

Families of the Clan Conmac The Clan Conmac is represented by O’Kiely of West Connaught; MacShanley traced to 1473; MacPrior (Pryor); O’Ferrall, Lords of Analy, of whom several pages are given including pedigrees of the different branches of the family. O’Roddy is also of this clan, traced to 1704 here. The other families of this clan are given along with family history, and they are: McFinvar or Caynor (Gaynor); McCormick; McDorchy (Darcy); Reynolds or McRaghnail which is given with various notes and pedigrees including Thomas and John Reynolds of Dublin, and notes on the family down to 1798; O’Cuinn or O’Quinn and O’Quin of the race of Fergus are included here with many notes as well. The O’Drinans or Drennans are given at the end of this section and noted as having the name changed to Thornton in some cases.
Many of the families above are given with a written description of the arms of the family.

The Final Word Full size 8 1/2 x 11, 90 pages, with heavier parchement cover, from 19th century originals, includes all the families of the Clanna Rory as given. One of the early works of Irish family histories published in Ireland in that century. The companion volumes in this series are: “The Milesian Families of Ireland”; “The Scottish Macs“; and “Irish Genealogies“.

Many researchers will express no interest in an old clan history like this. I, being a fanatic, find it curious and interesting. It is both an early printed work, and perhaps marks the state of the mind at that time for ‘clan’ genealogies.

Coming in from the printer on Monday, with the
new upgraded full color county map !
See link above for detailed description.

NOTE: For those who do not read book descriptions
on my web page at www.Irishroots.com, remember:

Finding Your Family in our spiral bound Irish County Books
This illustrated, indexed book, was created exclusively to help you find your family in this county in Ireland. A full color map of the county from the 1800’s graces the cover. Focusing specifically on families within the county, it includes an introduction to research and sources in this county. The most numerous families from birth records are given, as well as rather rare Galway families found in heraldic records. Included you will find a listing of modern parishes and old townlands, along with the address and location of records for more research. Published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation, this guide book was originally made for members researching in in the county.

Including
This work includes copies of actual records (some worn, torn and faded), from the IGF Library. It also includes rough sketches of family coats of arms and notes from centuries past – seldom found elsewhere. The resources provided here will help research any family in the county, including old Irish families, and settler families from England, Scotland, Wales and the continent. This book is a hands on guide for finding your family in the county- some family history is included – but it is not a gigantic collection of family histories . (For that see ‘The Book of Irish Families, great & small’, the first book in the Irish Families series by O’Laughlin.) It may or may not include your family.

Is Your Name in the Book?
3) Search for your surname in the master index to all of our books here:
http://www.irishroots.com/content/view/21/45/ . That will tell you if your specific surname is included in most of our books. Remember our spiral bound books are to acquaint you with records and resources within each county, which will help you even if a specific name is not found in a given book.

Random Links
Today I am sharing a few links of interest
that I came across in October. It still amazes
me that ‘millions’ of records are regularly
being advertised on genealogy web pages.

Millions of genealogy records now.
That’s because when I first typed in a search
for Irish genealogy, (decades ago), only two
or three hundred sources came up on the
search engines, with scanty information.

Todays Links
Here are todays curious links:

Mc Neill Boyd
Catherine McKay
I am researching Francis McNeill born abt 1780 in Layd parish, Antrim, Ireland. He married Rosetta Boyd born abt 1785. They emigrated to Richmond, Lennox & Addington, Ontario, Canada in 1817. Known children were Sarah, Laughlin, and Mary Ann

King
Christine King
My grfather Martin F. King b. Dec 1874 in Clifden to Thomas King and Mary Heffernan.

Sullivan
John Sullivan
Where to get info on Kilcatherine Parish, County Cork.

Dillon
Peter Dillon
I’ve been researching the Dillon and Ronan families. Mine came to the U.S. by way of Argentina, and there is a fascinating history of how the Irish came to Argentina in the 1840s. My quest now is to trace the families back in Westmeath and Offaly

Bradley, Young
Heidi Anthony
My family is from Kings County and Queens County, but I have no more information.

Jackson
Johnie Jackson
Ancestor of Anthony Jackson, early Quaker. Helped to establish first Meeting in Lurgan in 1654

Ross Higgins
Debra Rowe
Have researched family in southwest Missouri for a number of years. Seeking to learn more about the culture of both my own and my husband’s Irish families. Our connections include surnames of Howard,Ross and Higgins. We reside in the KC metro area and are looking forward to learning and participating more in regard to various Irish events.

Lyons
Allen Lyons
Family of James Lyons prior to 1852, I think they lived in Co. Tyrone, Ireland

Lightbody Mc Nutt Branigan
Rob Fulton
Looking for mother of Hugh Lightbody or wife of William Lightbody in Bangor, N. Ireland. 1870-80. Hugh born in Bangor in 1881, his older brother also Wm. b. Pittsburgh in 1875. Also McNutt(s) in Co. Donegal and Branigan(s) in Co. Louth.

Marie Golden Kerr
My grandparents were from Rathlacken in Mayo. I would like to find relatives there and in Sligo.

Campbell, McKenna, Black, O Neil, Dale, McAllister, Brannigan
Joseph Rodriguez
I have many families that lived in Scotland but according to their birth cert or census records they originated or at the very least lived in Ireland (mainly Ulster, Co Antrium, Co Armagh) – the family names are Campbell, McKenna, Black, O’Neil, Dale, McAllister, Brannigan etc

Johnson
Heather Jennings
Johnson from Doneraille, Michelstown, Flemmingstown area. ggrandfather Harry Alcock Johnson and a place called Dromleigh Lodge

Heffernan
John Heffernan
Searching for my gr,gr,gr grandfather Timothy Heffernan. Appears once on the US census 1860 with sons James b.1824, William b.1828, Thomas b.1822 and Patrick b.1842 along with his wife Ann. Son John b.1812 (per his tombstone in Texas) and Patrick b.1818 were not on the 1860 census. Obviously, Timothy b. 1780-1790s and Ann b. 1790 – 1800 were not using their true given names. I am in the Heffernan DNA project and I am trying to trace back to Ireland. The sons of Timothy all seem to have come to Texas. Timothy possibly is related (maybe brothers) to John and James Heffernan b. 1780-1790 and John Ryan (their cousin, also same birth range) who came to Beeville, Texas in 1829. All three plus John’s wife and children, were killed by the Mexican army. They received land grants in exchange for signing up to fight the Texas-Mexican war. They all died in 1836. But the flow of Heffernans in Texas did not stop. Thank you for any help you can give. John Scott Heffernan

Fenton
Deborah Budd
My gg grandfather, John Fenton was born in Passase West, Co. Cork in 1819-mariner-(Falmouth, Casey Carroll

Patrick Casey
I did extensive research in my family tree and have yet to let anyone down in their search (& I am very hard on myself accepting facts). My paternal great grandfather Daniel Casey b. 1842 in Lackabane townland, Donoughmore County Cork married Margaret Carroll b 1859 NYC. Her brother John Carroll was one time Deputy Leader of Tammany Hall. Their parents were Patrick Carroll b. 1823 County Limerick & Mary Roche b. 1829 Doneraile, Cork. Would love more info on them. My grandfather George Casey was a NYC detective that married a Marjorie Hughes b. 1897 NYC. Her parents were Peter Hughes b. 1865 in Tellehan Parish, Leitrim Townland, County Monaghan, and came to NYC in 1890. His parents were John Hughes & Lizzie Mucklin…there are lots of Hughes in Leitrim, I probably still have kin there. Peter married my great grandmother Margaret Duffy b. 1864 Patrick Duffy & Mary Duffy…I believe also from Couny Cork, would love innfo on them. My materanl grandmother Mary Wrenn was born in NYC 1903 to David Wreen & Margaret Young, both from Rathekeale, County Limerick although they married in NYC. David’s parents were David Wrenn & Mary Histon. Margaret’s parents were George Young, a famous dance innstructor, and Katherine O’Brien. The only hole in my family tree I dream of getting info on is my materal grandfather, Patrick Kehoe. Records I find listed him as Irish although he was born in Bonne Bay, Newfoundland in a fishing community called St. Joseph’s Cove that his father helped found. His parents were Thomas Kehoe (sometime interchanged throughout his life witht he spelling Keough) and Catherine Elizabeth Fogarty. I recieved a certificate of achivement from some Newfoundland geneaologist applauding my success in finding Thomas Kehoe’s parents where they failed. His parents were James Kehoe b. 1832 & Mary Moxley b. 1830, both in Carbonear Newfoundland. They married in 1857 in St. Patrick’s Parish there. I believe his parents were John Kehoe & Mary Power. My trail runs dry there. Most believe the patriarch of the Kehoe’s in Newfoundland came from County Wexford. They say Newfoundland it the most irish place outside Ireland, many came there from Eire because the fare was less expensive. Catherine Elizabeth Fogarty’s parents were Patrick Fogarty & Mary Kennedy, also from Bonne Bay & Carbonear.
